Macron hit with egg during visit to trade fair

At a restaurant and hotel trade show in the southern city of Lyon on Monday, a man threw an egg at French President Emm­anuel Macron.

Speaking at the International Catering, Hotel and Food Trade Fair, Macron stated, "If he has anything to tell me, let him come" (SIRHA). "After that, I'll pay a visit to him."

When the centrist president declared that gratuities made with a credit card would no longer be subject to tax, fairgoers' enthusiastic greeting for him was rudely interrupted.

France's politicians, including Macron, are no strangers to the detritus of angry protester-dropped eggs.

During a visit to the Paris National Agriculture Fair in 2017, while he was still a presidential candidate, an egg exploded in his face.

Later, in June, he was slapped across the face in the southern city of Valence by an unidentified individual.

The 28-year-old man was sentenced to four months in prison after telling a court that he sympathised with the anti-government "yellow vest" rallies of 2018 and 2019.

As the centrist leader boosts up public appearances ahead of a re-election campaign, it's assumed that Macron's security detail will stay on high alert.

He has not yet officially declared his candidacy for a second five-year term in the April election.
