Iran, Saudi Arabia hold first talks since Raisi’s appointment

BAGHDAD:

Two Iraqi sources confirmed on Monday that Iran and Saudi Arabian representatives met in Baghdad for the first time since President Raisi was ushered in as Iran's new leader in Tehran.

In accordance with a previously agreed upon roadmap, the last week's meeting covered outstanding concerns between the two countries, including diplomatic representation between them, according to an Iraqi official. He claimed it wasn't a ministerial level meeting, but he did describe it as fruitful.

Irak has recently been the go-between for two regional rivals whose conflict has frequently resulted in the deaths of Iraqis and others in the region.

Since the initial direct talks between Riyadh and Tehran in early April, further rounds of conversations have taken place in Baghdad. Since President Joe Biden's predecessor, Donald Trump, lost his unwavering support, Saudi Arabia has sought discussions with Iran to conclude its years-long Yemen conflict against Iran-backed Houthi rebels. During this time, Iran appears to believe that a gradual detente with Saudi Arabia, a longtime friend of the United States, will work in its advantage during new nuclear discussions.

Baghdad hosted a regional summit last month, bringing together Arab leaders of state and government, including Iran's and Saudi Arabia's foreign ministers.
