Who is eligible to apply for the Chevening Scholarship?

Chevening Scholarship applications for one-year master's degrees at UK institutions are currently being accepted.

Chevening allows exceptional rising leaders from throughout the world to study in the UK for a one-year master's degree.

There is no such thing as a "typical" Chevening Scholar, but those who succeed have ambition, leadership characteristics, and a desire to make a good difference in their home countries.

If you match our qualifying criteria and other conditions, we urge you to apply. We are unconcerned about your gender, age (there is no maximum age restriction), sexual orientation, religion, marital or parental status, caste, class, or other characteristics. What counts is your ability to write a well-thought-out application that indicates you are capable of thriving in a demanding master's programme in the United Kingdom and that you have a clear vision for your future.

Eligibility:

Ineligible applications will be denied, so be sure you fulfil our eligibility requirements before you begin your application.

  1. To be considered for a Chevening Scholarship, you must meet the following requirements:
  2. To be eligible for Chevening, you must be a citizen of a Chevening-qualified nation or territory.
  3. After your award has expired, you must return to your home country for a minimum of two years.
  4. By the time you submit your application, you should have completed all components of an undergraduate degree that will allow you to enrol in a postgraduate programme at a UK university. In the United Kingdom, this is generally comparable to an upper second-class 2:1 honours degree, however it may change based on your subject and university of choice.
  5. Have at least two years of work experience (equal to 2,800 hours).
  6. By July 14, 2022, you must have applied to three distinct qualifying UK university programmes and obtained an unconditional offer from one of them.
  7. If you meet the following criteria, you will not be considered for a Chevening Scholarship:
  8. Unless you are a citizen of a British Overseas Territory or have BN(O) and are applying from Hong Kong, you must be a British or dual British citizen.
  9. Have refugee status in a country that is not a Chevening qualifying country. Applicants must be citizens of a Chevening-eligible country and have refugee status in that country to be considered for a scholarship.
  10. Are an employee, a former employee, or a relative* of an employee of Her Majesty's Government, or have been within the last two years from the opening of Chevening applications (including the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, all British Embassies/High Commissions, the Home Office, the Ministry of Defence, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, the Department for International Development, and the Department for International Cooperation).
  11. Workers, past employees, and relatives* of Chevening Partner employees are allowed to apply, however if the employment took place within the last two years, you will not be eligible for a Chevening Partner Award from the organisation where you work, formerly worked, or are related to.
  12. Have previously studied in the United Kingdom with the support of a UK government scholarship.
  13. You can apply for a Chevening Award to study for a second master's degree in the UK even if you have a master's degree, as long as you can clearly explain why it would assist you fulfil your career goal to impact good change in your home country
  14. Applications are electronically sifted against our eligibility requirements when they are submitted. Ineligible applications will be deleted from the selection process. Please check this page for a list of frequent mistakes. If you commit these mistakes on your application form, you will be disqualified. Please keep in mind that you cannot make changes to your application once it has been submitted.

Work experience :

Before completing your Chevening application, make sure you satisfy the scholarship's minimal work-experience criteria. Applicants for Chevening Scholarships must have at least two years of work experience.

You will be unable to submit your application if you do not already have the minimum degree of work experience.




Types of job experience that are acceptable

The types of work experience that are eligible for Chevening can include:

  • Employed full-time
  • Employed part-time
  • Volunteering
  • Internships can be paid or unpaid.
Work experience can be obtained before, during, or after completing your undergraduate education; however, any required work that counts toward your undergraduate or postgraduate degree will be ineligible.

You do not have to complete the work experience requirement in a single job. In order to satisfy the criteria, applicants might submit up to fifteen distinct employment periods. Please indicate the periods that make up the highest amount of hours worked if you have held more than fifteen positions.

If you are currently employed, you are not need to resign from your employment by Chevening. It is recommended that you discuss your application with your employer, and it is your duty to guarantee that if you are accepted for a Chevening Scholarship, they will release you. How do you figure out how much job experience you have?


By multiplying the number of weeks worked by the amount of hours worked every week, your entries will be computed automatically. A working week is 35-60 hours long, and a working year is 40-50 weeks long for this computation. Anything that surpasses the full-time employment limit will be considered ineligible.
